Johnny Palmer of SXS Events shone the #bristolbluebeacon from the roof of we the curious in recognition of the work NHS and keyworkers just after the weekly applause. A poetic account of the uncharted territory science reaches into.

In 2011 six majestic Kashmir goats were introduced to a steep gully on Durdham Down in Bristol by Avon Gorge & Downs Wildlife Project. The project aimed to manage scrub regrowth, giving wild flowers and unique species to the Avon gorge, such as the Bristol onion, a chance to flourish as the goats only eat woody plants. Traditionally sheep had grazed the gorge, although not in over 100 years. The project was initially met with criticism as the gorge homes a unique species of Whitebeam or Sorbus tree, so it was thought the ravenous goats could endanger them. They have co-existed successfully and the project was extended beyond its original 5 year plan. Sadly however, only two goats remain in 2020. In separate incidents later in 2017, two were chased off the gorge by dogs and I believe two more died from natural causes. I am not sure if plans to introduce any more goats exist, but i am happy to have captured the full herd in 2017.
